National Volunteer Week Project List

The theme for the 2006 National Volunteer Week, April 23–29, is “Inspire By Example” because it truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help, as well as, to inspire others to serve.

Many organizations across the state will hold recognition events to recognize dedicated West Virginian’s, while others have planned community service projects in which they will utilize veteran as well as new volunteers to get things done in the Mountain State!

The Commission encourages interested volunteers of all ages and abilities to get involved as West Virginians come together to “Inspire by Example” this week.

April 19, 2006: Home Service Volunteers will be honored for their commitment to Mountain Hospice. Home Service Volunteers primarily visit patients for interaction and socialization, this is extremely important for terminally ill patients. Additionally, volunteers can provide relief for primary caregiver, homemaking/cooking, shopping, bereavement support, social services and clergy support.

April 27, 2006, 2:30-4:30pm: Commissioners from the West Virginia Commission for National and Community Service will have their annual meeting at Playmates of Kenova (725 Chestnut Street) and will participate in a community service project with the center. Wayne County Community Learning Centers and Kenova Playmates students are doing a gardening project as their learn-n-serve community project. The gardens created will help supply local food banks with fresh vegetables.

April 25-28, 2006: Read Aloud activities are scheduled for grades K through 5. Volunteers are invited to share stories and have discussion at various time allotments.
Saturday April 29, 2006: A Pool/Pot Luck Party is planned at the Larry Joe Harless Community Center. Guests are invited to bring their families and a covered dish while all enjoy a day of FUN. During this time, the volunteers will be honored with gifts, pictures and Certificates of Recognition.
