John Ballengee has been a Commissioner for Volunteer West Virginia, the state's Commission for National and Community Service, since 2006 and serves on the Performance Oversight Committee. John says his inspiration to serve came from the opportunity West Virginia gave him to have a successful career and raise his family in such a great environment. In addition to serving as a Commissioner for Volunteer West Virginia, John is the Executive Director of the United Way of Central West Virginia. Prior to that, he spent 31 years making a career in the financial industry. In his spare time, John enjoys traveling with his wife and spending time with his nine grandchildren and extended family members.

Sam Cipoletti has been serving as a Commissioner for Volunteer West Virginia, the state's Commission for National and Community Service, for eight years. He served as the Chairman of Volunteer West Virginia from 2009 to 2010 and helped start the West Virginia Business Volunteer Council, a program of Volunteer West Virginia, which he co-chaired with former First Lady Gayle Manchin for 4 years until 2011. Sam recently retired from his service as the Director of Government Relations for Verizon WV. He recently established Cipoletti Public Affairs LLC in 2011. Sam is inspired to serve because he believes in the mission of Volunteer West Virginia and has served many years in his local church. In his spare time, Sam plays bass and rhythm guitar in the contemporary praise band at his church. Sam also enjoys reading, visiting the beach and spending time with his family.

Shannon Cunningham has been serving as a Commissioner for Volunteer West Virginia since 2006. She chairs the Planning and Program Development Committee and is a member of the Governance Committee and the West Virginia Business Volunteer Council's Steering Committee.
Shannon's parents raised her to believe that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to his or her community, treat one another with kindness and to actively create the best communities possible. " We have a responsibility to one another as fellow human beings," she said. Aside from her work with Volunteer West Virginia, Shannon
is President of the West Virginia Grantmakers Association. She actively volunteers with the Dollar Energy Fund WV Advisory Committee, the Arts Council of Weston, and the Weston Development Authority. In her spare time, Shannon enjoys hiking, reading, cooking and traveling.

Michael E. Hooper began serving as a Commissioner of Volunteer West Virginia in November of 2011. A Member of Jackson Kelly PLLC and the Assistant Practice Group Leader of the Firm's Land and Natural Resource Development Practice Group, Michael’s practice is focused on business and real estate transactions, including matters involving mineral rights, titles and leases, commercial real estate development and financing and commercial litigation. Michael attended Lehigh University and graduated from the Pennsylvania State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in history with distinction in 1983. Thereafter he attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1986. He is a recipient of the Kaufman Award presented by the West Virginia State Bar for pro bono legal service; the 2000 Firestone 100 Who Serve Award; the Lions Club International Foundation's Melvin Jones Fellowship; the West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation's Leonard Jarrett Award and several Progressive Foundation's Leonard Jarrett Award. In addition to his appointment to Volunteer West Virginia, Michael currently serves as president of Laughlin Memorial Chapel, first vice-president of the Wheeling Lions Club and director of the Children’s Home of Wheeling, Inc. He resides in Wheeling, WV with his wife and three children.

Janet Somerville is the Program Director of the Foster Grandparent Program, sponsored by the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council, serving Calhoun, Jackson, Marshall, Ohio, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt and Wood counties. Janet earned her Associate’s Degree in Business Technology from West Virginia University at Parkersburg. She currently serves as President of the West Virginia Senior Corps Directors Association where she has been a member for the past 9 years. Janet was recently appointed as a commissioner for Volunteer West Virginia, in November 2011. She has served as a member of the Faces by Leadership conference planning committee for the past 4 years. Her work with other community organizations includes serving as GEMS Chair of Altrusa International of Parkersburg, Inc., WV Energy Express Coalition in Parkersburg, WV, and a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 113 of Elizabeth, WV. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband George on their farm on Windy Ridge in Wirt County. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, cross stitching, and card making.
