Join us July 20-22 at the Charleston Civic Center for the state’s annual gathering of people strengthening communities through volunteerism and service. This year’s state conference on volunteerism, community service and service-learning offers a variety of interesting and innovative presentations and workshop sessions.
Dynamic Keynotes - This year, you’ll not only find the great skill-building workshops that attract participants time and again, but also hear from three insightful and inspirational keynote speakers. Opening keynote speaker Renee Verbanic will inspire us to think about the many gifts and talents are community members bring to the table to create a strong community. She will use the life-sustaining leadership lessons and skills passed on from her immigrant grandparents as examples and lead follow-up workshops afterward. Our second keynote, Luther Snow, will help us learn to better recognize the overlooked and untapped assets in our communities and put that knowledge in action to collaborate for powerful and wide-ranging impact. Finally, the innovative and dynamic Timothy Johnson will inspire us to conquer our fears and take action to move our communities forward.
2010 Governor's Service Awards - West Virginia's most prestigious volunteer awards will be given during the 2010 banquet held on Wednesday, July 21 at the Civic Center as part of the conference. For a list of this year's winners, click here.
Networking Opportunities - The nearly 400 people who attend the conference have the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones from among the government officials, business and community leaders, nonprofit and national service staff/volunteers, and members of faith-based organizations who attend the conference.
Diverse Workshop Topics - Conference participants will get new ideas from more than 50 workshops that address everything from legal issues, to advocacy, to using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to map service locations - just to name a few. Download the brochure for a complete list of workshops. Some conference sessions count toward the Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the WVU School of Social Work. thinking or collaboration. Come share
information about your program!

Exciting Conference Closing - They’re back! Isaac Joseph will close this year’s conference
- sending us on our way full of energy and spirit. This singing
duo first performed at the 1997 conference at Snowshoe and has
been a part of the motivating spirit of this event many times since then, most recently in 2009.
Pre-Conference Events - Preparing for emergencies is the focus of this year's pre-conference events. Finding Solutions for Disaster Volunteer Management (Monday, July 19, 3-7pm) - This event is a facilitated conversation between state agencies, Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, and other disaster response and recovery stakeholders. The goal is to identify specific, relevant solutions to managing volunteers during the response and recovery phases of major disasters. Please come armed with ideas and energy to help us solve this longstanding gap in West Virginia’s disaster preparedness efforts. Working with Special Needs Populations During Disasters: What Do You Need to Know? (Tuesday, July 20, 8:30-11:30am) - This pre-conference session will provide you with the knowledge, resources, and technical assistance necessary to understand the specific needs of special populations throughout the planning, preparedness, response, and recovery stages of disasters.
