Bethany College, West Virginia Campus Compact member, partnering
with Relay for Life
September 28th
Friday afternoon
There is a Relay for Life fundraiser on campus on October
12-13. To help get the campus in the spirit of this event,
we are planning a campus 'treasure hunt' competition for
the afternoon of Friday, September 28th. Student teams will
visit participating campus offices to hunt for items to
include in a gift basket. The teams will supply the basket.
They will use the items collected, or others that they purchase,
to develop a theme basket. Baskets will be assembled over
the weekend and turned into the Service Learning Center
on Monday, October 1. They will then be displayed in the
campus restaurant, The Beanery. Students will vote for a
winning basket by putting loose change in boxes supplied
for this effort. The change will be donated to Relay for
Life. The designers of the three winning baskets will win
a gas/gift card or may donate the equivalent funds to the
Relay. All of the baskets will be auctioned off during the
Relay event. We think this is a great way to build community
support for this important cause.

needed are individual packages: mac and cheese, cheese

200,000 children in WV qualify for free or reduced price
meals through the National School Lunch Program, the fuel
that they need to get them through the week. What happens
to these children when they go home over the weekend?
During the school-year Milton Baptist Church is filling
their backpacks with single serving ready to eat mini-meals

and adults in need of new and gently-loved hats and gloves
to help keep them warm. If you have an extra pair, please
consider donating to this mission project.

a coat that doesn't quite fit from last year, please consider
donating to this mission.
Keep it Brief--Just One Pair!
What are you thankful for? The food that you eat? Clothes
that keep you warm? Have you ever stopped and thought
‘I’m thankful for my underwear’? You
would be surprised how many children there are that do
not have their basic needs met like having clean underwear.
Adults are also in need of this basic clothing item. Please
consider donating a package of underwear for local children
and adults in need in our area.
Socks for Soldiers: Thinking
of a way you can say Thank You to the men and women on
the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan? How about tube
socks. That is right, they need the simple things, the
things that we all take for granted. A soldier’s
typical gear weighs about 90lbs that he might have to
carry for days at a time. Being constantly on the go,
there isn’t always time or extra water available
to wash out the socks plus being in remote locations there
isn’t access to a store to purchase more. Help send
our troops a message from home – they are appreciated.
This is one way we can help make a real difference in
the life of a soldier. The socks will be added to Missy’s
Christmas Care packages that ship in November.
National Make A Difference Day
Make a Difference Day is the nation’s largest day
of volunteering. The MBC AWANA, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts
will co-host Trunk or Treat. The event will invite our
local Pre-K and Elementary students to participate on
Sunday, October 28th. Please consider helping by donating
items for each trunk. Items needed are individual packages
of animal crackers, Oreo’s, Goldfish, Whale crackers,
Lego Gummies, Marshmallow's, M&M’s, Hershey
Kisses, Pretzels, Starbursts & Candy Apple Suckers.
Perhaps your organization would like to participate in
the event as well.
Operation Christmas Child is
a unique project that brings joy and hope to children
in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled
shoe boxes. It provides an opportunity for people of all
ages to be involved in a simple but hands-on project that
has the power to transform children’s lives. The
shoe boxes don’t just offer physical items to make
life better for children. The gifts also present an opportunity
to learn about the Gospel through “The Greatest
Gift of All” booklet, which explains the story of
Christ and salvation through Him.
How can you help? A suggestion list of items to fill your
box is below.
TOYS: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos,
harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys
that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky®,
etc.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons
or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper,
solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in
a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.
OTHER: Hard candy and lollipops (please double bag all
candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball caps;
sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights
(with extra batteries)
A PERSONAL NOTE
In a separate envelope, you may enclose a note to the
child and a photo of yourself or your family.
(If you include your name and address, the child may write
back.)
Do not include: Used or damaged items; war-related items
Such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate
or
food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable
items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol
cans
Operation Shoe Box Soldier
Operation Shoebox was founded in 2003 to send support
over to our men and women deployed outside of the USA
to help raise their morale and let them know they are
cared about. We accomplish our mission with care packages,
letters, and bulk shipping of items that can be beneficial
to them during their deployment. MBC is adopting a soldier
with the support of the youth and the Wednesday Night
Ladies Bible Study group. Our goal is to mail one card
a week and once a month mail a package to our soldier.
If you would like to contribute to the project there are

county area often rely on the food pantry to supplement
food needs and asking visitors and state residents to the
park to contribute a food item is a simple service to provide”
says Brennon O’Sullivan, park superintendent. “It
is a selfless act of sharing.” Non-perishable donations
maybe left at Tygart Lake Lodge. The food will be donated

Upshur
- West Virginia Wesleyan College
Buckhannon WV
Sept. 21st through Sept. 29th
Time of event - weeklong
Upshur County has two food pantries that provide much needed
food for families who face food shortages. Both Upshur food
pantries, the Salvation Army and the Parish House, report
that peanut butter is an important food donation due to
its nutritional value and is a food that families with children
particularly need and appreciate.
However, peanut butter is one of the least donated items
and when it runs out, pantry directors use their agency’s
limited funds to purchase peanut butter to ensure that it
is available. In recognition that peanut butter is consistently
in short supply and strains the resources of the food pantries,
the CCE is organizing a Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive
in recognition of the September 29th Day to Serve initiative
proposed by Governor Tomblin.
All faculty, staff and students will be encouraged to support
the drive through emo, posters and specific requests to
groups such as Student Development staff, School Directors,
Athletic Teams, Residence Halls, Greeks etc.
The kick off for the Spread the Love drive will begin on
Sept. 21st with donations from parents who attend Family
Weekend and continue through the week. Donations will be
delivered to the Parish House and the Salvation Army following
September 29th.

We will be making cards and writing notes of appreciation
and encouragement to our community's first responders. This
idea also prompted us to make this a project each 9 weeks.
We will include other groups such as nursing homes, hospitals
and the military. We want to continue this project throughout
this school year.
