West Virginia Association for Volunteer Administration

By the West Virginia Association for Volunteer Administration

The WV Association for Volunteer Administration (WVAVA) was established in 1989 as a state affiliate of the Association for Volunteer Administration, the international professional membership association for individuals working in the field of volunteer resources management. Membership is open to salaried and non-salaried individuals in public, nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Members include directors of volunteers, volunteer coordinators, program administrators, agency executives, educators, community resource managers, researchers, consultants and trainers, students, fundraising professionals, leaders in religious communities, employee volunteer program managers and youth service corps staff.

Designed for those who want to develop their professional skills and enhance their careers, WVAVA provides opportunities for promoting the exchange of ideas, celebrating the successes, and addressing the challenges inherent in working with volunteers. It also increases awareness and cooperation among those involved in the coordination and implementation of volunteer programs; advances the volunteer administration profession; and provides networking opportunities. WVAVA strives to provide high quality volunteer program management training and assistance to interested individuals, groups, and agencies.

WVAVA meets quarterly at locations across the state to allow members to attend at least one or two meetings each year without having to travel a long distance. Each meeting includes a professional presentation and a business meeting.

WVAVA, in collaboration with the Commission for National and Community Service, has designed a curriculum for volunteer program management. The Basics for Effective Volunteer Program Management (BASICS) and the BASICS ‘Train-the-Trainer’ curricula are reviewed and controlled by experienced WVAVA members. Individuals completing the Train-the-Trainer workshop can go on to be active, certified trainers for the BASICS workshop. The WVAVA curriculum committee is working to certify individual members and specific workshop topics so that they can be listed on its web-site as approved instructors and/or workshop topics.

WVAVA co-sponsors the annual West Virginia State Conference on Volunteerism, National Service, & Service Learning at which four WVAVA members present a nine hour Volunteer Leadership Academy. The Academy is a series of six workshops especially designed for newcomers to the field, or for those who need a refresher course in volunteer resource management or documentation of training. The curriculum incorporates the basics of volunteer management in an integrated set of workshops. Participants in the academy gain a greater understanding of their role as a leader of volunteers and how they can develop an effective, planned program of recruitment, supervision, and recognition. They receive a certificate of completion.

To register for the 2005 Volunteer Leadership Academy, complete the registration form in this year’s conference brochure.

For more information about WVAVA, or to schedule a BASICS class in your area, contact Carl Townsend at 304-234-3673 or email: Carl.Townsend@mail.wvu.edu. Annual membership is currently $15 for WVAVA and $55 for both WVAVA and International AVA.

The International Conference on Volunteer Administration will be held November 2-5, 2005 in Jacksonville, Florida.
